Christopher Nolan. . . Caught in LIMBO by the Academy
The Academy Awards are this weekend and as everyone is getting excited to celebrate The Kings Speech and The Social Network, I am sitting here thinking about how much I dislike the Academy. My distaste for the Oscars dates back to 1994 when Forest Gump won best picture over Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
Don’t get me wrong I love Forest Gump, it is a movie I can quote the entire script and every time it is on TV I watch it. But there is no way that Forest Gump was the better film then Pulp Fiction. Pulp Fiction’s unique style of storytelling, making A list actors supporting roles and just an overall classic visceral film. But I am not here to talk about Pulp Fiction I am here to talk about a man that is repeated snubbed year after year by the Oscars, Christopher Nolan.
Christopher Nolan has been the most consistent director working. In the last 10 years Chris Nolan has wrote and directed; Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception. And in all of those films he was snubbed by the Academy. You can make a case that he didn’t need to be nominated or win the award for all of those movies but there is no denying that each one of those movies was a top tire film of which the year it was released.
I’ll start with The Dark Knight, not because it is my favorite film of all time but because of the high quality film that it was. It changed the superhero genre forever. It was the most critically acclaimed and highest grossing movie of the year and to this day is the highest grossing non-James Cameron film of all time. The film revolutionized the IMAX camera and used a little to no to CGI in the film. And most impressively Nolan gathered an amazing group of actors to bring about some of the most memorable performances in cinematic history. The Dark Knight was Christopher Nolan’s baby and everything that the movie is, is because of him. What did the Academy do? Snub the film for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, & Score. You can say as an obsessed fan boy that I was bitter, and I admit I was, but I was willing to let it slide after I saw INCEPTION.
INCEPTION was one of the most entertaining and smart movies of last year. It was an original idea not a remake or a sequel or some cheap converted 3D movie. It was a film that had an amazing cast ensemble of one A list star being out shined but a bunch of relatively unknown actors, that are now going to be super stars because of this movie. Now the Academy is recognizing INCEPTION this year in a lot of major categories, such as Best Picture, Screenplay, Cinematography, & Score. But the 1 big glaring hole is BEST DIRECTOR. Yet again the Academy wants to snub Chris Nolan. They want to recognize his idea and work in all the ways except for the most important and honorable way. It is one thing for him to be nominated and not win but another thing all together to not even be nominated.
