Let me start off by saying right off the bat, I love this movie. It is easily the best in the franchise and yes I do mean it is better than the original. Having said that let me give you a quick rundown of the plot and be mindful I may tread into some spoilerific territory so read at your own risk.
The movie starts where the last movie ended with Dom on a bus going to Jail and the daring escape attempt by Brian and Mia. After the intense break out we learn that Dom, Brian, and Mia are all fugitives wanted by the FBI.
The trio takes refuge in Rio de Janeiro with help from someone we have not seen since the original Fast and Furious. They are told about a job stealing cars off a train and after a backstabbing and major destruction on the train Brian and Dom are set up to look like they killed 3 DEA agents and now the FBI send in Hobbs played by The Rock to track them down.
The man that set Brian and Dom up is a drug kingpin that is essentially running all of Rio and he is after our heroes because they have a micro chip that was in the radio of one of the cars they were stealing. The Micro chip has a breakdown of his whole operation and as revenge Brian and Dom plot to steal $100 million of the drug lords money which they learn about from said microchip.
With the FBI and all of Rio’s criminal underworld as well as corrupt police, Brian and Dom enlist the help of more than a few familiar faces to pull off a heist that could end up with them all in jail or worse dead.
I don’t usually go so plot heavy on my reviews but this Fast and Furious movie goes totally against what we have come to know from the F&F movies. They essentially dropped the street racing all together and became a straight action/heist movie and I love it. It was reported earlier in the week that future installments of the franchise are going to go with the heist route and ditch the street racing thing and after seeing this movie it makes sense.
The stakes and the action are taken to an all time high. For the 1st time in franchise history there is a body count in these films. There is a lot of shooting and a lot of killing in this movie. It is no longer a “I can out run you in my fast car” movie. We now see Brian and Dom using guns and killing people. They didn’t ditch the cars and racing from the movie because the climax is a 15 minute chase all through Rio with a bank vault strapped to the back of 2 Chargers causing the most destruction in a car chase since Michael Bay’s Bad Boys II.
The Rock, and yes I refuse to call him Dwayne Johnson, is awesome in this movie. He is a total bad ass and a perfect adversary to Vin Diesel’s Dom. They have an awesome “balls to the wall” MMA style street brawl and I can tell you this, this is NOT the last time we will see The Rock in this franchise. Expect him to be a major player in the 6th movie, and yes they are making a 6thmovie.
Everyone that we know and love from the previous films are in this movie and it is fun, and all the actors get their share of screen time. Now as entertaining and action packed this movie is, it did have some flaws
It has the same flaws as the Ocean’s 11 movies did. Meaning everything seemed so convenient for them. They set this plan up and it gets executed so perfect according to plan that I was sometimes asking myself “Where did they get money to fund this?” now I know it is a nit picking compliant and realistically it is small and we seen worse in other movies and even with the flaws the entertainment value is through the roof.
Now a lot of people are negative and roll their eyes at the thought of fifth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise but believe me the nay sayers will change their minds after seeing this movie. And I for one can’t wait to see the next one because I love these characters and the stakes are just getting higher and higher and the action is getting better and better. This is easily the best movie I seen so far this year and the perfect movie to kick off the summer blockbuster season.
